IBM FlashCore Module 4 SSD Drive

Category:

Description

**IBM FlashCore Module 4 (FCM 4) Summary**
**Overview**
The IBM FlashCore Module 4 is a high-performance enterprise SSD designed for IBM FlashSystem storage solutions. It emphasizes scalability, efficiency, and reliability, targeting demanding workloads like AI, analytics, and large-scale databases.
**Key Features**
1. **High Capacity & Density**: Utilizes 3D NAND (likely QLC) technology, offering raw capacities up to tens of terabytes. Combined with hardware compression, effective capacity is significantly enhanced (potentially doubling or more).
2. **Hardware Acceleration**: Features on-board hardware compression and encryption, reducing latency and CPU overhead while boosting effective storage utilization.
3. **Performance**: Delivers high IOPS and low latency, optimized for NVMe interfaces (possibly PCIe Gen4/5) to maximize throughput.
4. **Endurance & Reliability**: Enhanced error correction, advanced wear leveling, and power-loss protection ensure high durability (improved TBW/DWPD metrics). Compatible with IBM’s RAS (Reliability, Availability, Serviceability) features.
5. **Energy Efficiency**: Lower power consumption per TB supports sustainable data center operations.
6. **Integration**: Optimized for IBM FlashSystem, enabling seamless scalability and leveraging IBM’s software suite (data deduplication, encryption, SAN/NAS support).
**Use Cases**
– Mission-critical enterprise applications.
– Data-intensive workloads (real-time analytics, cloud storage, virtualization).
– Environments requiring high throughput and low latency.
**Benefits**
– **Cost Efficiency**: Hardware compression reduces effective $/TB.
– **Speed**: NVMe interface ensures rapid data access.
– **Trust**: Enterprise-grade reliability with IBM’s end-to-end support.
FCM 4 builds on its predecessors by pushing boundaries in capacity, performance, and sustainability, solidifying IBM’s position in enterprise storage innovation.

FlashCore Technology greatly extends the longevity of flash

HardwareAccelerated Architecture

Deliver extreme performance, low latency, greater density, unlimited scalability, and missioncritical reliability by using IBMdesigned, purposeengineered NVMe flash storage modules.

Compression with no performance impact

Up to 3:1 inline hardwareaccelerated compression and encryption in every FlashCore Module that has zero impact to performance across the full range of workloads.

Encryption with no performance impact

Supports FIPS1403 Level 2 encryption with IBM Security Key Lifecycle Manager centralized key management and full hotswap capabilities without performance impact.

Groundbreaking density and performance

This storage media provides extraordinary density with the large

38.4TB being the highest capacity flash drive available in the market, while still achieving latency as low as 50 microseconds.

Smart data placement

Automatically position the most active data in SLC flash and the fastest QLC pages for highest performance, while the other data is placed on slower QLC pages to provide the highest flash drive density available.

Continuous health monitor for higher endurance

Heat bins get moved around, keeping blocks within 5% of wear. Health binning brings up to a 57% improvement to the endurance of the flash. Heat segregation brings up to a 45% reduction in write amplification.

Optimizing Voltage Thresholds

Think of optimizing voltage as the fountain of youth for flash, shifting voltage as necessary to ensure correct operation of all flash cells regardless of age or wear.

FlashCore Modules capacities

Available raw capacities: 4.8TB, 9.6TB, 19.2TB and 38.4TB. The maximum available raw effective capacities, resulting from hardwarebased zeropenalty compression are: 22TB, 28TB, 57TB & 115TB

Ransomware Threat Detection

Each FCM4, employs multiple hardwarebased technologies, which are used to examine all I/Os for anomalous behavior, which it can detect within seconds and report to Storage Virtualize, and Storage Insights.

FCM4 and Ransomware Threat Detection

FCM4 calculates entropy (estimate of randomness) and change in compression on every IOP. FCM4 keeps statistics on each IOP such as block size, LBA , and Read/Writes.

FCM 4 has two small RISC cores that process all this information. All this information is statistically summarized into a relatively small amount of information per volume. These summaries are passed every two (2) seconds to an inference engine in Storage Virtualize.
